Cut Flowers for January
Even though my mother isn't a huge flower fanatic like me (I inherited that from my dad), she always buys herself some cut flowers in January. She says it's cheaper than a session with a psychiatrist and just as helpful for the mild depression that's hard to escape during a grey Washington January.
Last week I took her advice and picked up a bouquet of roses from Costco. Only $15 for two dozen roses, and they perked up my mood nicely. I put them in a ceramic bowl that my grandmother passed off to me. What a family affair.
Roses don't last nearly as long as carnations, which is why I brought my grandmother a vase of carnations in her favorite colors: coral, hot pink, and a bicolor carnation that brought the two colors together.
If you're battling the January greys (which are even worse than the blues, by the way), I hope you have enough left in your budget to pick up a few cut flowers to bring home. If not, you can enjoy these pictures instead. No matter what others say, I think eye candy is good for the soul.
What a gorgeous bouquet. They would lift any ones spirits just looking at them. I had my heart set on getting some primroses at our local grocery store today. They were suppose to be $2.49. I wanted them to add some color to this long winter. Well everyone else must have had the same idea because there was not even a leaf left from one. LOL! A lot of people must need flowers indoors to lift them up this winter.
ReplyDeleteStunning photos! The colours are amazing and a perfect antidote for a winter's day!
ReplyDeleteSuper eye candy! A bouquet really does perk up one's mood. Just lovely.
ReplyDeleteLovely colors. It just makes me happy to look at those photos!
ReplyDeleteI love your photos on the whole blog. What kind of camera and lenses do you use ?
ReplyDeleteI wish I would've seen them at Costco yesterday. They are really pretty in the bowl. I picked up a Hyacinth and Tete-a-tetes for inside so I could see some bright colors inside.
ReplyDeleteGood idea. I think that might just be the cure!
ReplyDeleteSuch beauty! I hope they smelled good too.
I am going to treat myself now.
What a great idea. My mom always suffers for the Winter greys (great term btw), maybe some flowers would help her too.
ReplyDeleteIsabelle, I keep meaning to put a note on my sidebar about camera and lenses, since I'm always curious about what others use, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. So I use a Canon Rebel XS and either the 24-70mm f/2.8 or the 50mm f/1.4 from Canon. I read advice that you should get the cheapest camera that will work for you and then splurge on lenses, so that's what I did. The 24-70 cost almost 3 times as much as my camera, but it opened up a whole new world in photography for me. The 50mm f/1.4 is the mid-price lens for 50mm (among a cheaper f/1.8 and more expensive f/1.2), I just got it at Christmas, and I'm enjoying the sharper focus from a fixed-length lens, though it's less convenient out in the garden since I can't zoom at all. I dream about upgrading my camera (and giving the Rebel to my little sis) but don't know if I use it enough to justify the cost of upgrading. Photography can bankrupt you if you're not careful!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea, VW! I've been trying to buoy the mood for awhile... cut flowers might just be the ticket! :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree flowers can sure help cure the January blues...er I mean grays. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteTrader Joe's has perfect daffodils that I thrive on this time of year.
ReplyDeleteAllison, you'll never get back here to see this reply, but thanks for stopping by, cuz! My mom favors daffodils, too. She always buys bunches and drops them off to lucky friends, too.
ReplyDeleteYour pictures of your roses are enough to perk me up! Simply gorgeous!! Your mother sounds like a very smart woman indeed.
ReplyDeleteDon't you just LOVE Costco flowers?! We supply flowers to them up North and I'm always impressed with their pricing. You truly are buying at wholesale prices!
ReplyDeleteThe roses and your photographs are lovely.
ReplyDeleteThese roses look wonderful, and so beautifully arranged. I agree - flowers are the best therapy - they are good listeners too.
