Red & Violet Flowers for January

January is a good month for vivid colored arrangements, even in a year with little snow (knock on wood). These red roses and violet statice make yummy eye candy.

I put this arrangement together for my grandmother. Every amateur floral arranger should have an appreciative grandmother to ooh and ahh over each creation, regardless of how well it turns out.

The roses came from Safeway and the greenery from a little floral shop in town. The shop only charged me 35 cents per stem of plumosa fern (Asparagus setaceus). What a great deal!

Even though these roses aren't as pretty as old-fashioned or English roses, I'm happy to see anything blooming in the dead of winter. Maybe I wouldn't appreciate crimson 'William Shakespeare 2000' English roses as much if they bloomed year-round?

Have you heard that David Austin is getting into the cut flower trade? Check this link out. Their flowers are gorgeous but rather expensive.

Good thing my grandma doesn't mind plain old hybrid teas for her kitchen table.

  1. VW... thank you for your response and you are so correct... I have seen so many Tiffany lamp originals and reproductions... many would never get a second look because of the colors, but even more than that... it's the way the colors in true art glass are used. This is really where the true "art" of creating Tiffany reproductions comes about... artistic use of all the anomalies and variations that appear in a sheet of art glass. The "Tiffany girls" were not all of the same ability in this regard and so too the reproduction artists of today. Have a great day and thanks for responding to my question! Love your arrangement on this, your latest post... Larry

  4. great arrangement, it is nice (I have a mother and a mother in law) to have someone like what you give them even before they see it! It is even more rewarding when it is blooms out of your own garden, which will be soon i'm sure.

  9. VW, what a beautiful bouquet of reds and purples. Great for January blahs. I am impressed that you create such lovely bouquets. I really don't like taking the flowers out of the garden - some habit I recently picked up. But getting them elsewhere - well, I can go with that, Thanks for sharing the beauty with us.
